DOA approved as a first level discipline PhD granting institute
On March 30, 2020, the State Council Academic Degrees Committee formally approved the Department of Astronomy at Tsinghua University as a first level discipline PhD granting institute.
The Department of Astronomy (DoA) at Tsinghua University builds on the Tsinghua Center for Astrophysics (THCA), which was established in 2001. Profs. Tipei Li, Charling Tao and Shude Mao acted as the successive directors. The center was housed within the Department of Physics but also comprised faculty from other departments. In March 2019, the University decided to expand THCA and establish a new Department of Astronomy; the inaugural ceremony was held on April 21, 2019. The approval of the DoA as a first level discipline PhD granting institute will play a positive role for the future development of Tsinghua astronomy.
