Introduction:

Prof. Wei Cui was a core member of a team at the Universe of Wisconsin-Madison that first developed X-ray microcalorimeter and successfully applied the detector technology to astronomical observations in space on a sounding rocket, and received an award from NASA for his contribution. As a Research Scientist at the MIT Center for Space Research (now the MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research), he participated in the construction, testing, and operation of the All-Sky Monitor (ASM) onboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite, and was again honored by NASA. He carried out a series of research on black holes based on RXTE observations, which led to major breakthroughs. He joined the faculty of the Department of Physics at Purdue University in 2000 and rose to the rank of Full Professor in 2009. During his tenure at Purdue, he made important contributions both to the VERITAS and LSST projects. He returned to China in 2018, on a full-time basis, and has been leading the HUBS and DIXE projects. He built the Low Temperature Detector Lab to develop cutting-edge technologies, including superconducting microcalorimeter, multiplexing readout, and adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator, and has thus laid a solid foundation for the development of HUBS and DIXE payloads. Prof. Cui is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
